Adaptive and Modified Art
Modified Lessons
My goal is for every student to participate in our general education curriculum. I work with our special education TAs and plan for modifications with every project.
Cityscape
Students studied cities around the world and observed building shapes and city features. Materials: Permanent marker, Watercolor
Modified Cityscape
The modified version asked students to choose and study one city and its features. The student named shapes, then cut paper and added details. Materials: Cut paper, Color Sticks
Superhero Self Portrait
Students created a superhero and background reflective of their interests and physical features. Materials: Permanent marker, Watercolor
Modified Superhero Self Portrait
Student created a background using rulers and templates. Then the student was photographed and used eye gaze communication to choose the design and colors of her uniform. Materials: Crayon, Watercolor, scrapbook paper.
Paper Mosaic Design
Students created an animal themed mosaic using smaller paper squares.
Mosaic Design
The modified version provided students with blocks and challenged the student to create an abstract design. The finished product photographed and printed.
Collage, Artist Inspiration: Kandinsky
Students used tempera cakes to paint the background, then traced, cut, and layered concentric circles.
Concentric Circles
The modified version provided students with precut circles and challenged students to layer concentric circles.
Adaptive Art
Utilizing untraditional tools enables my students with fine motor skill challenges to create art on their terms. I initiated an ongoing partnership with University of Texas engineering students to develop tools that explore new ways for students to create art.

Alternative Lessons
A variety of alternative art projects are prepared and include all materials, instructions, and samples. These kits provide supplemental projects for students who may need an alternative activity for a variety of reasons.
